Thoughts on Sailor Moon Crystal so far?

For those who don't know, Sailor Moon Crystal is an official remake of the Sailor Moon anime and currently airs (read: is uploaded online) every two weeks or so. It follows the manga much more closely than the original anime, meaning that it's more fast-paced. (Also, the theme song is amazing.)

I was really excited about the new anime at first but episodes two and three were a serious drop in animation quality as far as I'm concerned and although episode four was okay I don't know if it's worth to keep watching. I'm hardly an authority when it comes to animation (I studied animation at college for a year but had to drop out cos I was crap at it) but the animation in SMC just feels so ... amateuristic (is that a word?). I haven't watched anime for years so I don't know if all anime are like this (that is, inconsistent and wonky-faced; the crystalquality blog on tumblr raises some good points about it), but it just looks so bad to me??

I think my main problem is that (compared with the original anime) everyone just looks so pretty. There are almost no moments whatsoever when Usagi pulls a weird face or looks a bit silly like she did so often in the original anime and it makes Sailor Moon Crystal look overly glossy and undynamic. Perhaps it's because I'm so used to seeing stills and gifs from the original but something about the remake seems off to me.

Thoughts, anyone?

If there's one thing I've learned about modern anime, it's to wait for the blu-ray version if you expect the best visuals. Sadly, yes, a lot of modern anime visuals seem to be rushed-looking and are often inconsistent (Haganai's first season was trite with this), but that being said, I don't mind Crystal's visuals too much.

That said, Crystals is in a very unique position compared to most other shows now, that it's a modern anime, trying to emulate a classic manga, trying to appeal to both crowds. Between the eyes, hair, CLAMP-esque legs and noses, Crystals is essentially a 90's anime debuting in the 10's, and I feel like there's bound to be a conflict of styles happening even if they don't mean it to. In a world of moe-blobs, Crystals is trying to bring rough, angular designs back, aha.

I still dig it, though. Ami/Mercury's design and transformation especially blew me away. I love it~ And even though the designs or w/e can be a bit inconsistent, I imagine the blu-ray versions will fix that up no problem. I get that's a cop-out, since you aren't watching those now, but it's a real thing that'll happen, so I take it into account.

I think you and I both know that, as a Bishōjo, everyone's /meant/ to be super-pretty, aha. That said, that same concern is actually why I agree with you. The fact that there are far fewer silly-faces and such not only makes the anime more seriously toned and such, but it means it actually deviates from the manga we were told it's trying to imitate more closely than the original anime. While the original was silly and added filler, it at least played with the idea that Usagi was playful and failable. The new version is held very tightly to Usagi succeeding as a Scout and fulfilling her Queen-fantasy.

... That or I'm looking too hard into an anime again. Wouldn't be the first or last time.
